For forty years I saw America and the world  mostly from 35,000 feet.

Over the past decade I finally came down to ground level. The Pandemic stopped me from getting in the next plane.  I may have been one of the few saw the Pandemic as the stop sign I needed.

The Pandemic was a time of reflection and  the start of a reboot. The other phase of my reboot was the death of two close friends in a private plane crash. Their deaths came two days after a long festive dinner with my family and I. The ultimate reality check of the transitory, random nature of our lives. I immediately stopped a business I had started in Asia and India. Tic-Tok.

So we starting exploring. Three years and 20,000+ miles in an RV towing a Jeep, through places I'd only ever flown over: the Great Lakes, Mississippi, Kansas, South Dakota and more. I met a lot of people and came away with a far better understanding of middle America and what my fellow citizens are working toward.

Then trips across Alaska,  Europe (Romania, Hungary, Croatia, Slovakia, Scandinavia) by car, train and ship.

And I'm finally reconnecting with the English literature degree I earned long ago, writing and making art at barryrutherford.com.

The best time of my long life. More to follow.
